Proceeds from this product will go towards setting up a small business for a lovely young lady in Uganda.
Despite being born into an extremely poor family, with little to no opportunity for personal growth and prosperity, Amy has always dared to dream. Despite being abandoned by her parents when she was a very small girl, Amy has always strived for a better life. In a family where HIV is prevalent and loss is the norm, Amy has never, ever lost hope.
When raising the money to pay school fees, became too difficult, she feared she would be forced to marry and be condemned to a life of poverty and ongoing child bearing.
Thankfully, she was taken in by our good friend Beatrice, where she quickly set about helping with the younger children. When my friend first met Amy around 4 years ago, she was struck by her gentle kindness to others, her hardworking ways and her resilience. Amy was determined to find a way of supporting herself, so that she could build a future that she couldn’t foresee otherwise. She desperately wanted to undertake some vocational training, so that she could work in a salon. She needed to learn the fine arts of massage, makeup and hairdressing. Eventually, Amy’s persistence paid off and she was given the opportunity (through sponsorship) to complete the training she needed to fulfil her dream.
Having recently completed her course, Amy has been unable to find secure employment. She has needed to travel quite a distance to work or volunteer in various salons, where she has been exploited or underpaid. Sometimes she doesn’t earn enough to cover the costs associated with travelling to the job or her meals.
It is our plan to help Amy to establish a salon of her own, closer to her home, where there is a need for a business such as hers. We know there is a market for a salon in the area and we know her kind ways and amazing skills will make hers a success.
Together with our friend Beatrice, we have devised a business plan and once raised will be passed on to Amy, as a no interest loan. She will pay the money back into a fund, in small increments as the business grows and this fund, in turn, will be used to assist another young woman to establish a small business. In this way, we hope to make some small impact on the issue of child marriage and gender inequality in Uganda and some big impact on individual lives!
